Ultimate Cask Collection Packaging

In 2018 Chivas launched the third and last of its Travellers Special Limited Edition Ultimate Cask Collection range - its First Fill Japanese Oak Finish. Created for Duty Free, each of the collection’s 18-year-old whiskies are finished in a different first-fill cask. The first edition has been finished in American oak, the second in oak from the Limousin region of France and the last in Japanese Mizunara Oak, some of it up to 200 years old.

Each of these finishes has imparted distinctive notes to each of the whiskies. For example, the French edition has spicy notes of cinnamon, warm hazelnut and milk chocolate while the Japanese edition has notes of clementine, pears, vanilla and exotic spices.

We have designed all three of the editions, based on Chivas’ 18-Year-Old bottle, capsule and label configuration. Although all of the three designs employ the same trope - a ‘bowtie’ device on the front of the gift carton - and design features (such as the brand’s luckenbooth) each edition has changes in colours and finishes, and specially designed bottle labels.

The most notable change to the colour scheme was to the third edition which broke the mould by using an overall white colour for the carton, instead of the blue of the other two, to adhere to a more Japanese aesthetic. In its case the blue was used for the ‘bowtie’, branding, luckenbooth, text and bottle display area, and this was combined with black and red Japanese calligraphy.
