Client: Cumbria Tourism
Project: Branding & Headquarters Building
Our sensitivity to context and place has manifested itself in two ways in our work for Cumbria Tourism. First, it has helped us understand how to define and position Cumbria Tourism’s brand and, secondly, enabled us to design a stunning new headquarters for the organisation which reflects the functions and roles of the tourism body.
The building is recognised as a fine example of progressive architecture - in an area of high landscape sensitivity - and is considered an excellent workplace by its users. Its design is characterised by the use of local stone and a traditional dry-stone wall façade externally and modern, minimalist spaces internally. The latter have been designed using a combination of white walls, large expanses of glass and wood flooring.
Using local materials and traditional building techniques, we designed a modern, new building, which satisfies both the working style of the organisation and demonstrates a sympathetic understanding of the building’s location, namely the beautiful Lake District National Park.
